Membership Qualification Standards

Article 1.
The Board of Directors will approve membership in accordance with the standards specified in Articles 10 and 11 of the Bylaws of the Japan Academy of Nursing Science.

Article 2.
Regular membership will be approved for persons who satisfy one of the following criteria, and Article 4 of the Member Qualification Standards.

(1)A person specializing in nursing science, who is engaged in education or research at a university or college (including junior college).
(2)A person who practices nursing and has made a contribution to nursing science.
(3)A person who has made a research contribution to nursing-related science.

Article 3.
Approval for Supporting Membership will be granted to individual persons or organizations contributing to the fields of nursing, healthcare and medical welfare.

Article 4.
Any one of the following minimum requirements for research achievements at the time of membership application must be fulfilled.*

(1)A master’s thesis with its title clearly indicated (a master’s thesis in another academic field is possible if the content deals with nursing), or a special research topic equivalent to a master’s thesis.
(2)A book dealing with nursing (if joint authorship, the division must be clearly indicated).
(3)One or more research presentations at a nursing conference or nursing-related conference at the national level. (Details must include the presentation title, the conference title, the page numbers of the abstract, date of the presentation, and the names of co-investigators including the applicant.) If an application for a presentation to the JANS academic conference in the reference year has been accepted, this presentation will be accounted as one presentation even before the conference date.
(4)Publication of at least one research paper in a nursing academic journal or nursing-related academic journal at the national level. (The type of manuscript does not matter in this case. Details must include the article title, journal title, volume, issue and page numbers, month and year of publication, and the names of co-authors including the applicant.)
(5)One or more research articles in a bulletin from a university, junior college or research facility. (The type of manuscript does not matter in this case. Details must include the article title, the journal title, volume, issue and article page numbers, month and year of publication, and the names of co-authors including the applicant. Articles in a bulletin from a nursing school are not acceptable.)
(6)Two or more unpublished research reports. (The applicant’s name must be clearly stated either as a principal investigator, co-investigator, or research collaborator. If the applicant is not a principal investigator, the name of a principal investigator must be clearly identified.)
(7)Two or more submitted contributions to a nursing journal or nursing-related journal with a national readership. (Same conditions as (4) above.)
(8)Two or more research presentations at a nursing conference or nursing-related conference at the regional or local level. (Same conditions as (3) above.)
(9)Three or more submitted contributions to a nursing journal or nursing-related journal with a regional readership. (Same conditions as (4) above.)

Article 5.
Membership Qualification Standards shall be amended by resolution of the Representatives meeting in accordance with Article 13 of the Bylaws of the Japan Academy of Nursing Science.

Supplementary Provisions
1 Current amendments to the Membership Qualification Standards take effect from January 1, 2010.
2 “Requirements for research contributions at the time of membership application” are discontinued on December 31, 2009 because of amendments.
