    The mission of the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association and its professional membership is "Building healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke." The membership program is composed of 13 scientific councils and three interdisciplinary working groups (IWGs). Each council and IWG conducts multidisciplinary efforts that lead toward a better understanding of the heart, circulatory system, brain and other interdependent organs. These efforts ensure that sound medical and scientific knowledge underlies the association's efforts to reduce the impact of heart disease and stroke.
    Mission
    The scientific councils recognize significant achievement, leadership and outstanding contributions to cardiovascular disease and stroke medicine and research. Through such recognition, individual accomplishments are applauded and the legacy that built the scientific councils is kept alive.

    This is a summary of the aims and the working arrangements of the Association, drawn from the survey and the meetings in Amsterdam.
    IAPN goal and purpose
    The goal of the IAPN is to enhance the care of children worldwide.
    The United Nations Convention of the Rights of the Child, and its definition of childhood are the basis of the IAPN's activity, which will promote and advocate the health and development of children.
    The purpose of the IAPN is for paediatric nurses to communicate with each other - to have a network to help further the care of all children, meeting in spirit of collaboration, partnership and respect.

International Network for Doctoral Education in Nursing (INDEN)

    The aim of INDEN is to advance and promote high quality doctoral education in nursing through national/international collaboration and cooperation.
    Objectives
    In order to pursue the overall aim of advancing doctoral education, several specific objectives will be pursued by the Network:
    Create a common vision for the future of doctoral education;
    Develop quality indicators and guidelines for doctoral education that are relevant to different countries;
    Pursue opportunities for exchange of ideas for substantive nursing knowledge development applicable globally, in view of societal needs and evolving socio-political structures;
    Develop mechanisms to enable productive exchange of individuals and ideas across doctoral programs within and between countries;
    Provide opportunities for dialogue and networking among doctoral educators to address issues of shared interest in different regions of the world;
    Devise approaches for influencing policies relevant to doctoral education.
    In order to support the achievement of the above objectives a variety of approaches will be utilized. The following are illustrative:
    Recruit qualified individuals [as defined under "membership"] who will enrich the Network and further its aim;
    Develop an Internet list of individuals with experience in doctoral nursing education and supervision who can serve as resource to colleagues;
    Encourage doctoral student exchange across countries;
    Form a data base of doctoral programs with regard to features such as mentoring methods, curriculum approaches;
    Compile and share with members "best practices" in nursing doctoral education;
    Publish an electronic newsletter.

    The International Ophthalmic Nurses Association is an independent association founded in 1955 by Mrs. Carmichael, then Matron of Moorfields Eye Hospital, to provide an opportunity for Ophthalmic Nurses worldwide to share knowledge and experience. We provide an independent voice to promote the value of the Ophthalmic Nurse and currently have approximately 200 members in the UK and abroad.
    IONA aims to provide of a network of information between ophthalmic nurses worldwide by means of a bi-annual newsletter and an annual conference where prestigious key speakers present various papers & cases and facilitate workshops. We benefit from and encourage research work to enhance the care of ophthalmic patients in a variety of settings.
